Gilford is the daughter of actress Anne Gwynne^[2] (born Marguerite Gwynne Trice) and entertainment lawyer Max M. Gilford.^[3] According to Gilford, her mother would not allow her to act in film as a child.^[4]

Gilford studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and in New York.^[4] She played Abby Stone, a divorcée and head of the household, in the comedy A New Kind of Family.^[5]
